Firstly an apology:- I had meant to publish the date for the 2000 National Championships in the last
newsletter. However since then the date has been confirmed, as have other details, and I can definitely tell
you that they are from Saturday 26th August till Friday 1st September 2000 under the burgee of Looe
Sailing Club . Racing starts on Sunday 27th August and there will probably be a lay-day on Wednesday.
We are sharing the venue next year with the Albacore class which is a distant Cousin of the Redwing.
Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I think this is the first time we’ve shared with the Albacores? Going
back to the 1999 Nationals, the full results table is included with this newsletter.
Entry forms and further details for the 2000 Championships will be published early in the new century.
SALCOMBE FESTIVAL
We have received details of next year’s Salcombe Festival which is to be held in Salcombe, South Devon,
surprisingly, between 7th and 11th June 2000.
This is a classic boat festival that has been going for a number of years and attracts boats from as far afield as Europe and Russia since it started. The organiser of the small boat section this year is Steve Mullen and he informs us that there will be a special dinghy race on Saturday 10th June together with the Salcombe Yacht Club Handicap Fleet. I have some entry forms and further details or better still you can contact the organiser directly at 17 Vincents Road, Kingsbridge, Devon, TQ7 1RP Tel. 01548 856059
or by E mail on stemull@kingsbr.freeserve.co.uk
CLASSIC AND VINTAGE RACING DINGHY ASSOCIATION
Earlier on in the year Vice Chairman Rolly Squibbs was in contact with a representative of the Classic
and Vintage Racing Dinghy Association (CVRDA). This seems to be an organisation with some similarity
to our own but representing all sorts of classes of racing dinghy. One of the main ideas that has been
mooted is to hold some form of joint regatta where visiting Redwings may take part in a CVRDA event. It
is understood that the main area of CVRDA interest is the Westcountry. I will try and get some more
details of any events that may be of interest for next season. However in the meantime please contact Rolly
for more details on 01834 842170
MICHAEL MCNAMARA SAILS
News has recently reached us that our sailmaker Mike Mac is to retire in September 2000 “No problem!” I
hear you say, well not only is he retiring but he is selling the business as well which means that we will
probably have to find another sailmaker and change the Class Rule accordingly. Mike informs me that he
is attempting to sell the business to another dinghy sailmaking concern, possibly Speed Sails, in which
case we will be seeking assurances on quality, repeatability and price from them before making any decisions. I will keep you informed
as matters progress. Please note that the boat owning membership will be informed in writing of any
proposed changes and they will have to voted upon by an AGM.
ON THE CUT
I have had contact recently from Jon Cole of Braunston in Northamptonshire who tells me that he has
become the new owner of R187 ‘Jinx’.
Most of you will remember her from the days when Doug Johns kept her at Fishguard and it seems she
has passed through a few changes of ownership in the last few years until Mr. Cole happened upon her at
Salcome, in Devon. (She was the Redwing recently advertised in ‘Dinghy Trader’)
He tells me that he is now undertaking a mainly cosmetic restoration including the removal of layers of
antifouling paint from her bottom. Jon goes on to say that he actually lives in a Marina next to the Grand
Union canal and naturally ‘Jinx’ will be floated and used on the canal. There is a chance that she will be
the first Redwing to travel on an inland canal in England! However it is not the intention to actually sail
on the canal - Draycote water is nearby and will probably be her new sailing base.
